Locked in.
That sweet moment you connect your mic and power up your rig, where beyond that screen awaits a virtually vast and enriched experience. It’s immersing yourself in a world that’s instantly gratifying in beautiful artwork, hidden achievements, top rankings, and community that connects you to your people- those who understand you for you.
When you feel Free to be yourself.
Nowadays… you feel defeated when taking off your headset.
You plan your nights in advance, do everything you need to do to dedicate time for you to move up the ranks, own that boss fight, or finish that raid with the best loot. Then, you get hit with the trolls, poor internet connection, or worse… a losing streak.
It feels disappointing when things don’t go according to plan. You typically work with limited amounts of energy after a long day or an even smaller time window where your closest teammates can be online.
You want to feel accomplished while playing, to know that all the time you invest in your game yields some rewards with an extra ability to genuinely enjoy that experience with your crew. Instead, you’re left on Empty. Even after the game, you’re still running that scenario in your mind on repeat, asking yourself: Was that a bad call? I should’ve… did I do enough? And sometimes, you can even feel your sense of confidence falter and that’s when it really takes its toll on your gameplay.
For some, experiencing enough of these nights might leave you muting your mic more often, slowly retreating to cozy, solo game titles, and leaving multiplayer, altogether. Eventually, party invites or group chats quietly go ignored and leave friends asking and wondering where you went. For others, it looks like feeling the weight and pressure of performance and doing whatever you need to do to succeed, even if that means your body takes a toll or bridges are burnt in some of your friendships.
You deserve to Reclaim your Joy.
You know playing a game isn’t about winning, but why does it feel like it is?
As much as you don’t want to admit it, winning IS having fun. The idea of “success” rests solely on your experiences of feeling successful: that you’ve achieved, conquered, contributed, progressed, even proved yourself worthy to you or your team. In contrast, the fear of “failure” or losing is too much to bear or fully accept when you know what’s at stake, especially when so much of yourself is invested in the goal or outcome. Let’s not forget to mention the sacrifices you’ve made to even get this opportunity.
While it’s true – there is a game out there for everyone – a great game offers purpose for gamers: to be challenged, guided, or given creative opportunity to run wild in an open, sandbox experience. However, High-Stakes Gaming is a beast all on its own to tame and it’s, without a doubt, one that offers a unique sense of reward for the player. It’s when you experience those unforgiving moments of punishment that feels incredibly draining to your mental and emotional system that makes you want to pull your hair or shutdown.
Does this sound like your gaming experience?
- Choosing playing games over:
- Social hangouts that you promised to attend
- Plans that you made to catch up on tasks and responsibilities
- Questioning whether or not to send Invites to your friends
- Wondering if you should appear ‘Offline’
- Feeling a physical buildup or drop of energy when the game isn’t looking too good
- Looking for something to control, when things feel outside of your control:
- Emotionally shutting down
- Immediately muting your mic
- Leaving the Voice Chat/Party Chat
- Communicating your frustration to a teammate or enemy player
- Typing in All Chat to question/criticize playstyle or decision-making
- Sending a heated Private Message after a game
- Unfriending teammates right after a game
- Uninstalling your game right after a game
- Emotionally shutting down
- Look for something to release your stress right after a match
- Overthinking what you could have been done better to yield a different outcome
Do your friends, family, or partner sound like this?
“It’s just a video game. Get over it.”
“Why can’t you just…”
“You need to find other hobbies. Grow up.”
You can’t help but feel defensive and protective whenever this topic comes up. It feels like they only want to focus on the negatives, or what they feel you “should” be doing with your life, rather than try to understand why gaming is a big part of you. Sometimes, it’s gaming that creates space between you and the outside world that is societal expectations and performative masking, making it easier to dismiss their concerns. It isn’t until we start noticing some things that we actually pause and reflect for a second.

What to Expect in Therapy for Gamers
Identify Gamer Identity
Map Out Patterns
Underneath that passion for your beloved hobby lies deep roots that make up who you are and what gaming does for your sense of Self. We may explore gaming history, that exact moment (or game) in your life when gaming became important to you, and what it means to you now. This is where we meet the version of you that exists today.
Over time, patterns emerge; every human being is made up of a unique system that guides, jumps at the ready. Perhaps gaming is where you feel socially understood, where you feel most confident and competent in your skill set, or is there to catch you when you need to escape. Together, we’ll discover how gaming meets your specific needs.
Develop Strats & Skills
Integrate a Game Plan
Once the Fog of War is lifted and your clarity sharpened, we get down to the practical side of therapy: skill building. This will feel a bit like looking up online guides and walkthroughs. You will learn specific tools that help with in-the-moment scenarios, as well as ways to establish daily structure and routine outside of gaming, to achieve great synergy.
Practice, meet Progress. Expect change to look like learning the button controls for the first time. At times, it will feel awkward and frustrating. You’ll even slip a few times, but eventually, that muscle memory kicks in, where you and your body already know what to do. We stress-test all your hard work and gradually, your peace and confidence will grow.

What else are Gamers wondering about
Gamer Mental Health?
Yes. Video games can affect mental health in both positive AND negative ways. Gaming is a powerful tool that sets out to do what it aims to achieve: to connect with your specific, preferred playing experience, to sharpen your focus and technical skills, and to enhance your feelings of reward and accomplishment.
However, things start feeling unhealthy when gaming affects your mood, behavior, decision-making, and interactions with your loved ones, negatively.
Absolutely! Gaming can be a great supportive tool, alongside the traditional Talk Therapy approach. Gaming is beneficial in lots of ways, including skill building, emotional regulation, social connection, and building up your overall self-confidence.
In some cases, we may use Gaming as “Field Practice” to put your growing skills to the test!
How do I know if I’m addicted to Gaming?
This is a great (and very common) question. Officially proposed to as Internet Gaming Disorder, there is growing awareness of unhealthy, gaming-related behavior that holds potential for significant impact on mental health.
The answer is simple. It’s not about how long you play or who you’re playing with online with. It’s about how much control do you have over playing video games?
Reflect on these questions:
- Why does gaming not feel as fun anymore, but you can’t seem to stop (even after negative experiences)?
- How much of your mind is occupied by video games, even when you’re in the middle of other tasks or activities?
- Are you able to put the controller down and walk away, if you needed to?
- Do you sometimes forget about your other tasks or responsibilities that you had planned for the day, due to gaming?
- To what lengths do you go to make sure you get to play?
- To what degree has/does gaming impact your life and your relationships?
Not at all! The purpose of Therapy for Gamers is to help you:
- Game for pure enjoyment, instead of out of habit or chore.
- Feel good while you’re Gaming, instead of drained/heated.
- Find a healthy balance between your passion for Gaming and your life outside of Gaming.
Yes! When you are able to:
- Improve your stress tolerance to in-game environments
- Listen to your body’s cues for timeouts & breaks
- Recuperate your mind, body, & emotional states between game matches/sessions
Your overall relationship with gaming, and the joy you want to feel while playing, will improve!
